People are often promoted to the next level in an organization, in part, because they are seen as having been successful in their current role. The underlying assumption is, that since they have figured out what it takes to succeed, they will be able to apply these principles in the new setting. A move from professional to first-line manager typically requires leveraging some of the skills and expertise essential in the previous job, as well as acquiring new skills necessary for taking on increased responsibilities, including managing a team.
Occasionally, promising professionals are promoted two-layers in one go – from professional to manager-of-managers. They are expected to develop others in a role they have never assumed themselves! |
